Scope and Contents

Ralph H. Anderson was a Yosemite National Park Ranger and served as the official photographer from 1930 to 1952. Starting in 1953 to 1964, Ralph H. Anderson become the official Photographer for the Nation Parks Services.

Anderson first started to work for Yosemite as a seasonal ranger for the summer of 1929. During this period, an older park ranger Billy Nelson encouraged Ralph H. Anderson to apply for a permit position for the winter. Anderson became the riding instructor and Head of stables at Mrs. Arthur Woods Boys’ School. He was responsible for outdoor recreation for a Mrs. Arthur Woods Boys’ School. Anderson was the superintended all machinery, water system, etc. and operated station wagon, was assisted by cowboy who helped care for horses and saddle equipment. It was not until 1932, where Anderson become Information Clerk-Photographer for Yosemite. His responsibilities were to take photographs of scenic locations and park’s projects for newspapers and magazines. Anderson also responsibility for writing and distributing press releases to communicate new park policies, road and weather conditions, proposed developments, and the availability of facilities for the accommodation of the visitors. Anderson’s photographic skills were utilized for different photograph projects for Yosemite. Some of the projects includes making of lantern slides, enlarging photos for exhibits, copying old photos and documents for historical record, and the making of photo montages , people, family, Depression work projects, winter sports, government brochures/handouts, bear problems, local Indians such as Maggie Howard and their beautiful baskets, as well as copying carefully the photographs from the park’s earliest days for books such as Carl Russell’s 100 Years in Yosemite (1931), and for the many issues of the Yosemite Nature Notes. The negatives and positives of most of these photographs are in the Yosemite National Park Library, but the range of RHA’s photographic subjects is also well represented in his papers.
