Manuel Jimenez Files, bulk: 1970 - 1995

 Series — Multiple Containers

Scope and Contents

This series comprises the working files of Farm Advisor Manuel Jimenez, whose areas of expertise included small farms, vegetable crops, and integrated pest management. The records document Jimenez’s applied research, experimental trials, and early findings in agricultural innovation and pest control strategies. Materials in this series may include trial data, reports, research notes, correspondence, and related documentation. A significant portion of the materials relates to his pioneering work on managing tomato pinworm infestations in cherry tomato crops. At the time, growers were applying pesticides up to 20 times per season with limited success, leading to pest resistance and secondary pest outbreaks. Jimenez’s integrated approach focused on reducing pesticide applications and preserving beneficial insect populations to improve crop health and yield. Also included are variety trial records conducted at the UC Kearney Agricultural Research and Extension Center, where Jimenez led efforts to develop and evaluate new blueberry cultivars. Notably, in 2012, he experimented with grafting commercial blueberry varieties onto farkleberry (Vaccinium arboreum) rootstock—an approach intended to improve tolerance to alkaline soils, a common limitation in Central Valley farming conditions. Materials are arranged as found.
